CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Leadership
plays vital roles in the life of every organization. The success or otherwise
of an organization in todays dynamic business environment filled with
globalized competition, depends so much on the caliber of leadership such
organization has. no matter how vast your financial resources are, no matter
how sophisticated your machineries may be, it is the entrepreneurial capability
and leadership ability in your organization that will put these resources to
fruitful use that will enable them to achieve your corporate objectives.
As
Obisi (1996) puts it, Nigeria
is not so Lucky because she does not have many leaders of proven integrity. USA
can boost of such leaders like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, John F.
Kennedy, Henry-Gerald, Ford, Andrew Carnegie, Rockefeller etc. Obisi further
noted economy is sick because we lack many leaders who are visionaries, who
care for the national interest. At a time when the fast developing countries of
South and South East Asia like China,
Malaysia,
India etc are reaping and enjoying the fruits of open and market economy, our
leaders are still bogged down with corruption, nepotism, tribalism and
red-tapism.
According
to George Terry, the will to do is triggered by leadership, and lukewarm
desires for achievement are transferred into a burning passion for successful
accomplishment by the skillful use of leaders. Nigeria connate hope that the
future would be better and more manageable than the past unless and until our
leadership and people of this country make amends.

Fries, the company the researcher is using for her case study is presently
facing leadership problems. The working morale of employees are not committed
to their works and to the organization. Also, they do not obey laid down rules
and regulations that govern their organization the level of productivity is
very low. If nothing is done seriously and urgently too to salvage the
situation, the company shall go bankrupt and liquidate subsequently. it is on
